From The Carlson Family

Dear Salta coaches, parents and athletes,

Well it’s been almost two months since Syd took her unfortunate fall off the beam. As a family we have had to overcome the initial shock of the incident and are currently focusing on her recovery. We seem to have solved the hair-washing dilemma and with each day that passes our nervousness and anxiety levels are returning to normal. Just recently Syd decided to give her halo a nickname of sorts. After some contemplation she decided upon the name PITA. When asked why she wanted to call it PITA she replied, “It stands for pain in the a**.” We figured after all she has been through one or two swear words were forgivable.

Syd has now completed four sessions of halo adjustments and is hopefully only going to need two more. October 21st is the date set for removal of her halo (of course the doc will have the final say on this decision) which will be followed by physiotherapy. We understand that we have a long road to travel but Sydney has not altered her position on returning to gymnastics. She has even told her grandmother, “it is not IF she will return, it is WHEN she will return.” She is a determined young lady who has turned her situation into a chance to pursue other talents she possesses. For those of you who are not aware she has created her own small jewelry business entitled Gymhalo Jewels. She has also had the opportunity to frequent the theatre several times, read every gymnastic magazine and book Eva owns and socialize with gym and school friends.

This experience has also enlightened our family. We have had to rely on one another more than ever and survive each others frustrations. We have also recognized just how fortunate we are. Our halo toting daughter has been blessed to be surrounded by so many angels at Salta. Words alone can not express our appreciation and gratitude to each and every one of you. Your continued support and friendship are playing a vital role in her recovery.

Forever thankful,

The Carlson Family

A Journey to Remember

In her own words, Sydney tells her story.

A Journey To Remember
by
Sydney Carlson

It was my last turn to try and make the best round off back tuck on that day of July 17th, 2008, so I put my arms by my ears, my right foot in front of me with my toes pointed and my legs straight. I lifted my leg, put my hands on the beam and kicked my feet over top of my head. It was at that moment when I realized that stinkin left foot was just not going to meet the beam, but even though it wasn’t going to I was still going to try my hardest to use all the power in my right leg to make the back tuck all the way around and stick it and that’s just what I did but unfortunately I missed the all the way around part and landed on my neck. That’s when I heard it, the crunching of my C5 and C6 vertebrae. I wasn’t quite sure what to think, should I yell for help or should I get so frustrated that I could just not contain myself? That’s when I chose to yell for ice and began to stand up when one of my coaches, Kayla Whipple, who is also training to become a paramedic told me to lay down and DON’T MOVE!!! It was at that moment that I began my journey of courage. As the paramedics arrived and put me on the most uncomfortable board EVER it was pretty near impossible to have positive thoughts but all I could do was try and just think that everything would be ok. Before I knew it I was being released from the hospital and everything was going to be ok (or so I thought). So there we went, back to the gym to let every one know I was going to be ok. As I showed everyone my scrapbook pages that I planned to enter in the stampede, that’s when we got the call to get our butts back to the hospital (as Eva would say). Oh good lord did I have to pee so badly, and that’s when the bad news came, they were going to stick a catheter up there!!! Literately I thought it was the worst thing ever until I got the news that I had broken my neck. So this was it, all those times climbing on the fence and the trees at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house with Grandma yelling at me that I was going to fall and break my neck and it just so happened it wasn’t the fence or the trees, it was the beam. So they rushed me to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary by air ambulance, where I thought I was going to have the world’s worst experience there, but being there with my wonderful nurses Heather, Stephanie, and all the other nurses and being around all the sick children just made me realize how much we take for granted in life. After a horrible sleep that night the doctor came into my room with the news that seemed horrible but could, in the end possibly save my life, I was going to have to wear a halo. So here I am halo and all enjoying life to what right now is it’s fullest! There are a few good things about it though; I don’t have to pay for my cell phone for 5 or 6 months, I get out of carrying groceries for a while, and a lot more, and even though there are more bad things than good things all I can do is think positive and this will all be over in the blink of and eye. Like I said on my first walk in the hospital after the incident “whatever it takes”. And now when Grandma yells after me saying “you are going to fall and break your neck,” I can just say it has already been done. And even though most people think I am absolutely insane for going back to gymnastics I plan to go back and put my heart and soul back into it and “SHOW EM WHAT IM MADE OF!!!!”

One Brave Girl!

It was one of the longest 3 hours to Calgary we have ever traveled. All four of us, Eva, Dave, Kayla and I had been anticipating our visit with Sydney to see how she was doing. And let me tell you- all 4 of us agreed that she is one of the bravest people that we know!

If your just tuning into the story- let me go back a bit..

On Thursday morning, Sydney was just finishing up beam with her dismounts (she had competed the skill this year). She was doing one more round off, back tuck and then she was moving to the next event. When she did the skill, she missed her foot and didn't have enough rotation. She landed on her head. After arriving at Medicine Hat Hospital by ambulance it was discovered that she had fractured her neck. She was then transfered to Alberta Children's Hospital and the next day was fitted with a Halo (and mighty stylish one at that!).

After pulling up to the LEGO building (it really looks like LEGO!), collecting the much needed supplies for Sydney (who doesn't need a water gun and chap stick?) and tucking the art work (created by her team mates) under our arms, we headed up to Sydney's room. I must say, she has the best room in the place- her own personal bathroom with walk in shower, a HUGE 12” TV complete with DVD, her own personal remote control with a pager (for when she wants JELL-O) and a million dollar view of the city. Sydney looked amazing! The best part of the whole visit was hearing her laugh and seeing that big smile when it was unanimously decided that her mom was indeed in need of a “What-Not-To-Wear” intervention. After Eva's inspirational story, Dave's short anatomy class and the opening of gifts and hanging of art work- we tired the poor girl out and decided to let her rest and wished her a safe drive home (hopefully early this coming week!).

Everyone's thoughts and best wishes go out to Sydney and her family for a speedy recovery and we can't wait to see you back at the gym!

As we need to know numbers, please sign up prior to the event. We need as many volunteers to help decorate as well! The theme is posted with the sheet at the front counter for those interested!

Salta will be at the Crown and Anchor yet again for this year's stampede. Parents are encouraged to sign up. Starting date is on Wednesday, July 23 at noon will run until Saturday, July 26th. Please see Tera for more information. You will receive a admission ticket to the grounds when you sign up.

I must say, some interesting form this week- granted- everyone is in the "trying new stuff" process.

Summer Camps Have Begun!

After a week off, I'm sure everyone was excited to get back into the gym and start on those summer goals (well, I was!). Anyhow, we are mid way through the first week and I must say what a great way to start summer training! I have posted a few photos and will continue to do so through the summer.

Yes Alysha, you have the most valuable thing in the gym....

Summer Camps

Please be sure to sign up for competitive summer camps by June 27, 2008 (which is the last day of class). Salta needs to know how many athletes are attending so we can plan accordingly. If you are unsure of the camps, let Tera know you are unsure then contact the gym a week in advance to confirm. No confirmation may result in your child not participating in that week as we may not have the staff to accommodate. Thanks for your understanding.

Year End Wind Up Party

The competitive wind up party will be taking place at the Family Leisure Center on June 21, 2008 from 2:00- 6:00pm. Please sign up with Tera so we can account for how many people are coming. There is also a sign up sheet for what appatizers each family is bringing as well. See you there!

The Importance of Summer Camps

The end of the season is approaching fast and that means thinking about summer camps. Summer camps are probably the most important part of the competitive training. This is a chance for the girls to work on building their strength, working on skills that will potentially move them to the next level, etc. I will advise all athletes to attend as much training as possible. We are working on the schedule as you read this. We are hoping to get a few others clubs into our club this summer and perhaps checking out other gyms as well. More information to come soon!

AWG-Day Two.

Event Finals where held today and we had two girls qualify!

On Day 1 of the competition, against an incredibly tough field, Alysha hit a clutch routine on the balance beam, qualifying in second place for finals. Unfortunately, during finals, a fluke fall on her split leap took her out of the medals. Don`t worry kiddo- you looked good out there; and...there`s always next time.

Sheehan also competed on the second day of competition (finals). She qualified high in the rankings for both Floor and Beam, setting the tone for Day 2. On Floor, ever the competitor, Sheehan confidently solidified her stance as Floor Queen, bringing home the gold medal with room to spare. On beam, everything was going swimmingly until she stumbled and fell on her back tuck. However, the rest of the routine was so jam-packed with difficulty and performed with near flawless execution that she still managed to place in the medals (bronze).
