The registration forms have come out and we need to register athletes ASAP!

Please bring either cash or cheque made out to Salta for the lovely price of $125.00 no later than November 19th.

The registration price is quite high but it is an amazing meet and we are going to see clubs from England, South Africa, USA and Slovania!!

The host hotel is the Coast Edmonton Plaza. There are only 50 ROOMS left at the amazing price of $109.00. I have blocked off 6 of these rooms. If you would like one please email me and I shall give you a confirmation number. You will need to contact the hotel to make a name change/credit card change. These rooms will not last very much longer at this price!!!

I encourage all athletes to attend the International sessions as the gymnastics is promising (perhaps you shall see some future Olympians!).

Holy Smokes- HUGE Day Yesterday!

We started out with a big bang last night! Someone got closer to her beam dismount (Round off, Back tuck), someone threw a flyaway into the pit by herself for the first time, a cast to handstand finally came about, and a front tuck was put onto a medium beam!!!! I also saw some huge improvements with front tuck step outs into the pit! Great start ladies.

WARNING FOR PARENTS****** Sore athletes will be most definite*********

Welcome Ladies and Gents... and New Ladies and Gents!

Yay! The season is officially beginning in 3 minutes and I am stoked! With the new conditioning program under foot, a new warm-up/stretching strategy, a wonderful coaching staff and amazing gymnasts it looks to be a great one is around the corner! We have a busy schedule ahead of us so please be sure to keep reading the posts and viewing the calendar and checking the video blog!

Have a fantastic, healthy and successful season everyone!

Negative Nancy and Complaining Carols Party!

Since they both won the contest I shall bring in their prizes tomorrow!

Beat the Bugs

Salta is in the process of installing new hand sanitation stations. All people are required to sanitise their hands prior to entering the building (front door station) and athletes are required to use the stations when they enter and exit the gym. I also encourage all athletes to wash their hands WITH soap before entering the gym, at break, and after gymnastics. After all, you just put your hands on a beam where EVERYONE has placed their feet.... EWWWWWWW!

Because of the H1N1 virus and with flu season around the corner we are asking that any athlete with any of these symptoms stay home:

1. Fever
2. Sore Throat
3. Cough

For more information on H1N1 please click here.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

What's in Your Gym Bag?

Please be sure to pack the following:

1. Deodorant- nobody likes a stinky gymnast!
2. Socks- for trampoline/break time
3. Small can of hairspray
4. Water Bottle
5. Wrist bands for Ankles and Wrists
6. *****a roll of Tape********
7. Grips
8. Elastics for your hair and brush
9. A healthy snack- something that doesn't require long heating time as we only have 10-15 minute break times
10. A bright smile and an eagerness to learn!

Athletes must have a complete list if they wish to compete at the desired level.

Thank you,

Stampede Parade Stuff

2009 Stampede Parade- "Jungle" Theme

It's that time of year again, and boy is it a jungle out there! The stampede parade will run on Thurs. July 23rd and Friday July 24th with the decorating session being held at RSC Equipment (2230- 9th Ave. SW) on Wed. July 22nd from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Here are a few particulars:

• All participants are asked to dress in a jungle theme. Try any animal prints- dressing up as lions, tigers, monkeys, etc. Or go with the camoflauge theme, even grass skirts with shrunken heads (not real of course!). Be creative!!

• Participants in Thursday's parade will need to be down on 3rd Street in the Flats (usually between Ash and Birch Ave) no later then 7:45 am as this is when judging formally begins. Please keep in mind that the stampede marshalls do move our location from time to time, but we are always either on 3rd Street or 4th Streeet. If you are planning to stay awhile with your children, please be advised that parking is not available in this area.

• Participants in the Kiddie's Parade on Friday will need to be down on 3rd Street downtown ( just up from Dairy Queen) no later then 8:30 am.

• During the main parade on Thursday- there is no access to bathrooms!!!

• All participants will need sunscreen and a waterbottle.

• Please be advised that the truck and trailer unit that we are using from RSC this year is new. The truck has a tilt deck trailer attached. As a result, the trailer stands roughly 4 feet off the ground! THIS MEANS POSTIVELY NO MOVING AROUND ON THE FLOAT WHILE IT IS IN MOTION, AND THOSE KIDS WHO ARE ON THE STREET WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET BACK ON THE FLOAT UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE PARADE.

• Due to metal grating on the trailer deck, we ask that everyone keep shoes on at all times.

Picking up your children will be as follows:

1. Main Parade: Please pick your child up at RSC Equipment (2230- 9th Ave SW) as soon as possible after the parade is over. This is usually 10:15 am (roughly).
2. Kiddies Parade: Please pick child up from Salta. We will be getting all of the kids to help with taking the decorations off the float.

Due to the height of the trailer deck, as well as the stampede discouraging stopping for great lengths of time at the end of the stampede, we request that all kids are picked up the drop off sites, NOT by exiting from the float while downtown.

Summer Camp Week 3

Stampede Week Has Arrived!

Please be sure to pack a lunch as Salta does not provide lunches, snacks or water bottles (however there is a fountain)!

Monday:

Wednesday:

Kin Coulee again! We are also making decorations for the float. You will also need to fill out a permission form for the parade that needs to be handed back in by today!

Thursday:

So the campers can watch the parade, we will be meeting at 8:00am at the IGA parking lot (302 Maple Ave). Once the parade is finished, we will head over to Strathcona Park- again, shoes, hat, sunscreen and a bathing suit are mandatory. Please also send your child with their food as well. For Afternoon campers please meet us at the Water Park in Strathcona.

Day 4 at Level 4

Four days have passed and I am amazed at what I have learned at the sessions in the gym and in the classroom.

First thing- the gym was amazing. There are more mats, ropes bars and beams a coach could ask for. They have the cool Airmat by tumble trak (this would be useful not only in the gym but at demo's as well!). It reduces pounding and the transition from air mat to floor is easy (as quoted by the gymnasts themselves). Another cool training device was there sunken flat double mini they used for vault. All the kids flipped with ease into a pit using this and it was a fantastic way to do high numbers of vaults without the pounding. The new drills and conditioning ideas are too many to mention and I am excited to get back into the gym and start introducing them to our own athletes (girls, trust me you will like them!). I also saw a new fashion trend (as seen below). Many of the girls wore "athletic tops". They look like a gym suit but they are tanks! They don't ride and they look fantastic. Needless to say I have already contacted a supplier and they should hopefully arrive next week!

In the classroom we have done mental training for coaches. Most of us where a little apprehensive going into this session but it has proven to be a valuable asset and I have learned many different tools which I can apply to my coaching.

Another session we just started today was Physical Preparation with Keith Russel. Wow! This session has opened my eyes in terms of what we can do to improve our physical preparation and the different approaches we can use as well. Again girls, you are going to love this!!!

I have one day left and a exam than it's back to work! I hope all of you are working hard and look forward to see some new names on the charts ( NN and CC ) when I get back!

6 More Practices!!!

Only 6 workouts until Southern Zones!!!!!

Dealing with Fear...Again

I thought I would re-post this because we seem to have some fear issues creeping around the gym.

Back-spring gremlins???
So fear is a universally bad thing in gymnastics...right? Well...no. Fear itself has proven quite useful throughout human history (and pre-history), as evidenced by the fact that we are still around. Fear prevents us from doing the really stupid things that would most likely get us killed- rational fear that is. There is also another type of fear, an irrational type that, in gymnastics, can be debilitating. It can be like a little gremlin in our heads that prevents us from doing what we know we can do. An example of this is the "beam back-spring gremlin" that sneaks into our heads when we try to do back-springs on beam. And it comes at the oddest of times- like when we know that we can already do a back-spring on beam. But, for those fearful of you out there (and here I'm talking about irrational fear (I'm certainly not advocating jumping off roofs)), you needn't fear- all is not lost. There are a few specific techniques that you can use to overcome irrational fear.

Firstly, the ideas is to concentrate on the process rather than on all of the possible outcomes. That means that you shouldn't worry about all the possible ways in which you can hurt yourself, rather, you should think about those things that your coach has been telling you. Take the back handspring on beam as an example. Rather than thinking about all the ways you can fall off, think about what you are going to see and feel as you go through the motion. Think about what your legs are supposed to be doing as you jump. Think about seeing the beam before your hands hit. Think about watching for your back foot coming back down to the beam. And lastly, think about the solid and sharp finishing position. Of course, unless you have super-human information processing power (the thing your brain does when you think), that might be too much to think about in such a short period of time. So, just pick one or two things (your coach will normally give you a cue as to what you ought to be thinking about) and concentrate on those.

The second thing you need to do is trust your coach. Your coach has been involved in the gymnastics thing for a tad bit longer than you, and therefore she (hopefully) has more information than you. As a result, she knows when you are ready to learn a new skill. She also knows when something is unsafe. All this just means that she is in a better position than you to assess whether or not your fear is rational or irrational. So, if you don't trust your coach, either get a new one or adjust your perspective. Because, without trust, you're not going to get very far.

The last critical ingredient is to believe in yourself. By and large, you are your own largest obstacle to achieving your potential in gymnastics. By staying positive and focused on your goals you can be an asset to your own progress, rather than an impediment. I am often leery in quoting the man (he was a bit of a bigot), but, as Henry Ford once said, "obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."

So, to recap: 1) Process, not outcomes, 2) Trust your coach, and 3) Believe in yourself. Oh...and one last thing....please tell that back-spring gremlin to take a hike- he kinda creeps me out.

This is David Sykes, filling in for Becca- she said she didn't know what to write and threw the computer at me...it kinda hurt...but I'll get over it...

You Know You're a Gymnastics Parent When....

You know you’re really a gymnastics PARENT when…

* Volunteering for any bingo event together means date night!
* The fridge at the gym has more food in it for your kids than at home.
* Most of your kids’ photos are of them in gym suits, on a beam, or doing a floor routine.
* Your kids sometimes call their coaches “Mom” or “Dad.”
* You have more water bottles, hair doomahickeys, and gym bags in every vehicle just in case!
* You find an odd assortment of hair clips, elastics, and scrunchies in bizarre places throughout your house.
* Your diet consists of any fundraising product offered by your club.
* Laundry priority is always given to gym clothes.
* Family holidays generally involve a competition somewhere cold and to get there you usually have to travel in blizzard conditions.
* You ensure that there is always a box of Kleenex in your vehicle for those after-conditioning tears on the trip home.
* You have holes in your walls or broken furniture from tumbling attempts that didn’t go so well.
* A coach quietly asks for a parent meeting, and you just know this isn’t a good sign.
* You need to take out a second mortgage to pay for the new competitive track suits.
* Your child tells you that a mere 500 V-Snaps (daily) would help get rid of that flabby stomach…and you secretly hope that these are a new kind of cookie.
* There is more chalk brought into your house than dust.
* You play rock-paper-scissors to see which one gets to pick up the kids from the gym for the twelfth time that week….you lose again.
* When it’s back to school time you buy extra lunch boxes…one for school and one for the gym.
* You’ve been asked by the coach to stretch out your kid’s ________ (pick one: shoulders, arms, legs, back) and you are supposed to do this daily.
* More household money is spent on Band-Aids, A-535 muscle ointment, and hairspray than any other item.
* You have watched the gymnastics movie Stick It too many times to count!

Body Shaping Tool

Another cool device I saw at Gym-Action in Quebec. I thought this was a great idea!

COOL IDEA!!!

While at the level 4 course in Ottawa I got a chance to see a couple of gyms. At Gym-Action they had a couple of bars strapped to the ceiling!
